Graduate Entry : Combined Defence Services Examination
The Combined Defence Services (CDS) examination is a prestigious competitive exam in India conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The purpose of the CDS exam is to select candidates for admission into the Indian Military Academy, Indian Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, and Officers’ Training Academy. It serves as a gateway for those aspiring to join the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force as officers.
The CDS exam is typically held twice a year, usually in February and September. It assesses candidates’ aptitude in English, General Knowledge, and Elementary Mathematics, with variations in the exam pattern based on the specific academy they aim to join.
Upon successfully clearing the CDS exam, candidates undergo rigorous training at institutions like the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun; Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala; and Air Force Academy (AFA), Dundigal. The training is comprehensive, covering military tactics, physical fitness, leadership skills, and specialized knowledge depending on the chosen service.
Candidates opting for the Indian Army go through a challenging training regimen at IMA, preparing them for leadership roles. Those joining the Indian Navy train at INA, focusing on naval operations and maritime warfare. Air Force cadets undergo training at AFA, emphasizing aviation skills and military strategy.
Upon completion of training, successful candidates are commissioned as officers in their respective services. Indian Army officers lead troops in diverse roles, while Navy officers command ships and Air Force officers’ pilot advanced aircraft. The pay scales for officers are competitive, with additional allowances and benefits, reflecting the responsibilities they shoulder.
The honour and respect associated with clearing the CDS exam are immense. Officers are regarded as leaders and defenders of the nation, enjoying a high level of esteem in society. The uniform and insignia symbolize not just a job but a commitment to serving the country with valour and integrity, fostering a sense of pride and honour among those who pass through the esteemed gates of the CDS examination.
