How many field marshals have been appointed till now and who were they?
Till now, the Indian Army has appointed two Field Marshals:
- Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw – Appointed in 1973. He played a pivotal role in the 1971 India-Pakistan War, which led to the creation of Bangladesh.
- Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa – Appointed in 1986. He was the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army after independence in 1949.
Field Marshal is a five-star rank and is the highest rank in the Indian Army, held for life.
